What does the app do?

1. Portfolio growth: Sam is 40 years old and he has $100,000 saved. He wants to know if he invests that money in stock market for 20 years, how much will he end up with when he retires? He does the followings:
- Enter portfolio value ($100K) and time horizon (20 yrs.)
- Enter $5000 in annual contribution
- Enter asset allocation: 100% US stocks
- Enter 1% for fees spent on mutual funds or ETFs
- Click run

Monte Carlo now runs a portfolio starting with $100K for 20 years. Stock market return for every year (percentage gain/loss) is randomly picked from a set of real US stock market returns and applied to portfolio balance. For example: If first 3-year returns are 5%, 6% and 7% respectively, portfolio balance at the end of the 3rd year would be $119K (((100 x 1.05) x 1.06) x 1.07).

Since running just one portfolio wouldn't give enough information to draw any conclusions, Monte Carlo does this for 1,000 portfolios and then displays the followings:

- Median, 75 percentile and 25 percentile portfolio charts. If we sort these 1,000 portfolios in a low to high order based on their ending balances at 20th year, 250th portfolio from the bottom would be the 25-percentile portfolio (very pessimistic case), 500th portfolio would be the median portfolio (most likely case), 750th portfolio from the bottom would be the 75-percentile portfolio (very optimistic case).
- Money spent on mutual fund or ETF fees in 20 years
- Biggest decline in portfolio. If there was a market crash, how much did Sam lose?
- Standard deviation of the portfolio, aka the risk.

Based on the simulation result, Sam can see how if realistic his retirement goal is and make adjustments - if needed.

2. Portfolio withdrawal: Maria is 65 years old and she has $1,500,000 saved for retirement. She wants to know if her portfolio would survive taking out $70,000/yr. for 20 years. She does the followings:

- Enter portfolio value ($1.5mil) and time horizon (20 yrs.)
- Enter $70,000 in annual withdrawal
- Enter asset allocation: 20% US stocks, 80% treasuries
- Enter 1% for fees spent on mutual funds or ETFs
- Enter 3% for inflation
- Enable rebalance toggle. This way Monte Carlo will rebalance portfolio annually to maintain 20/80 asset allocation.
- Click run

Results are same as above but this time what is interesting to note is the success rate. It shows the percentage of portfolios that ended the simulation with a positive balance. If her success is 9% (90 out of 1000 portfolios survived 20 years) she may choose to withdrawal less every year.

3. Backtest portfolio: Maria may choose to see how her portfolio would perform in 20-year period beginning in 1995. This time Monte Carlo will the actual market returns from that time period. It also has to option to use the actual inflation also from that time period.

How many downloads do you have?

So far 168. Why so few? Two reasons. First, we are only in the Windows Store and it doesn't get much traffic. Most people don't even know about Windows Store. Second, we are not marketing the app. We are software engineers and business side of things (sales, marketing and etc.) is not our passion.

The great news is that app has received great reviews so far. We are confident that in iOS/Android app store with correct marketing strategy, it will be a huge success.
