At age 63 and after 10 years in the blasting business, I’m going to retire. Being self-employed most of my life, I consider this the perfect business model for an Owner/Operator with expansion opportunity.
This is a specialty contracting & subcontracting business. It is a niche trade for cleaning, profiling, removing coatings and general surface prep for a variety of substrates. This service covers almost every market segment, from concrete pool decks to food processing equipment to industrial storage tanks. Every job is unique and keeps the work interesting.
When I started this business, I was looking for a trade where I could be home based, have low overhead and needed no employees. Although I had 30 years of experience in the construction related trades, I had very little blasting experience. I spent a month researching equipment manufacturers before purchasing my first mobile blast machine and several months building the other aspects of the business…website, marketing, additional blast and containment equipment, etc. In my 4th year, I built my second machine, allowing me to perform larger industrial projects.
With no employees and low overhead, I’m able to pick and choose my projects, so I never panicked if I didn't work 40 hours per week. I focus on profitable commercial and industrial projects with some residential. I don’t blast cars or small parts, although that’s what I started with and could continue if I wanted every job. Although every project is unique, my standard rate today varies between $180 and $320+ per hour (depending on the machine and situation). I also charge for travel one way. This is average to high end for the industry in CA, allowing me to achieve a consistent average of 89.1% gross profit (GPA) over the past six years (Typical construction businesses in CA averaged 17 to 24% over 2020).
I’m an Owner/Operator with an understanding that my business has been a reflection of bidding, selling and performing projects based on my individual efforts and goals. I am the company. And although I have the equipment and daily procedures a bigger company may require, I’ve purposely made a choice to remain small. My clients have come from a conservative approach with GoogleAds and word of mouth, so I’m not offering a business with accounts. Another individual would certainly have his or her own style, business approach and goals, which may or may not include additional advertising, employees and expansion.
This considered, the sell price of my business is the price of the equipment. This includes, company artwork, a professional website, brochures & business card templates as well as Excel business templates for proposals, invoicing, job costing, job check lists, material & fuel tracking, etc. On-site training and/or consulting could also be available with a separate equitable arrangement.
This mobile business can be run out of your home if you have space for the equipment and a few pallets of blast media. Currently located in Modesto, I serve the entire central valley.
Fresno to Napa Valley and the Bay Area. However, this business model could be relocated to any state. Keep in mind this is a “service company”, so you'll need to be a hard working individual that’s good with his or her hands, self-motivated, organized and reliable. If so, this is a great opportunity.
Equipment includes, two highly maintained mobile blast machines (wet and dry), and all the related equipment to perform all commercial, industrial and residential projects. All equipment is impeccably maintained and like new. A full description and itemized asset list is available.
