Most paving contractors are built around either small local jobs or large construction projects. This company has spent decades building an operation that can comfortably handle both types of work. Its crews complete 500+ projects each year, ranging from routine repairs and maintenance to paving jobs that have reached seven figures. That range allows the business to serve a diverse customer base with an experienced team and established operating infrastructure.
Much of the business comes from pavement that already exists. Parking lots wear out, asphalt needs to be repaired or overlaid, ADA requirements change, and properties eventually need another round of maintenance. Customers who have worked with the company tend to return when that time comes, giving the business a recurring source of work across commercial properties, residential communities and public projects. The owner estimates that roughly 80% of revenue comes from repeat customers, despite relatively little emphasis on advertising or proactive sales.
The company has also grown well beyond the typical owner-and-crew paving operation. More than 40 employees support estimating, project management, field operations, accounting and equipment maintenance, with estimators responsible for carrying their projects from the initial bid through completion. The business maintains its own fleet and employs two full-time mechanics, allowing it to control much of the equipment and manpower required to keep jobs moving.
That operating depth has created a useful position in the market. Smaller competitors may pursue the same work, but often need considerably longer to complete it, while the largest contractors tend to focus on highways and major infrastructure projects. The company has built its reputation around being able to mobilize quickly, complete the work, and move on to the next job.
After decades of ownership, the current owner is preparing to retire. He leaves behind an established operation with an experienced workforce, a broad base of returning customers, and the equipment already in place to take on considerably more work.
