Andrew Markou on taking the business online...

“Coming from a paper-based publication as we had, it was a natural evolutionary step to simply say: ‘What is the offline proposition’ – it’s classified advertising.

“Then we said ‘Let’s take that online’, but we also gain the benefits of what we can do online on a digital platform.”

On gaining a loyal online following...

“People are relatively fickle and disloyal; FriendsReunited one day, Facebook the next. So you have to work very hard as an online business to secure loyalty, and it has to come back to good value.

We wouldn’t be here today if we hadn’t strived at the very heart of our business for those tenants and those principals

“We wouldn’t be here today if we hadn’t strived at the very heart of our business for those principles.”

On defining success...

“I think there are many factors that you can measure success by. I think the welfare of staff and employees, and the career path you offer your employees is important. Also, the conditions and standards in which the employees work is important.

“It’s a reality of life that we probably spend more time with our work colleagues then we do our own families. We may not reach the top of the mountain, but if we have a good time along the way we can’t have too many complaints.”
