Jen and Kelly on the generating the business idea…

"We are a family-run operation and we’ve been doing this since 1998. We sell mostly perennials, herbs and vegetables, all organic.

"Beforehand I was doing landscape maintenance in this area and I saw a need for more supply in the plant industry, and that’s what led me to do this.  I also had a friend who has a very similar nursery about four hours north of us.

On choosing their agricultural niche...

"We are actually considered agri-business because we do not grow things in the ground, so I can only speak for this portion of the agricultural business.

A typical day then is, to commute down from the house which is about 400 feet from the path, plant the seeds and water them, getting ready for the bigger part of the season to start.

Later on when we start to sell, we are pretty much done planting seeds but we’re still transplanting plants and watering and moving plants around, and also starting to contact my buyers. Then it moves to selling and delivering. This time of year I am mostly watering plants and delivering plants…
